Ground Penetrating Radar Services

ArborScan Inc. provides the most in depth subsurface imaging to Southern & Central Ontario. The technology we use is called the TreeRadar™ Unit (TRU™) and is specifically designed to be used in North America on a wide range of sub-surfaces including pavement, concrete, and gravel to effectively map out roots that lie beneath.

GPR Tree Trunk & Root Mapping

As one of the only consulting arbor firms in Ontario using the TRU System™ technology and software, we can say with confidence that we offer the most advanced and non-invasive tree root mapping services, including 2D/3D root morphology & mapping, root density maps, root size diagrams, soil horizon scans & more.

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) allows our team to map out tree health, root locations & trunk abnormalities.

Tree tomography is a non-invasive procedure that allows assessment without damage to the tree or the surrounding environment.

This can be used to determine a trees’ root location on study area and scan trees for suspected diseases and hazards.

Our staff are GPR certified, ready to review trees on your site and experienced to provide solutions for all tree related concerns.

About the TreeRadar Unit

TRU system technology features a 900mhz antenna that uses the same frequency as most cellphones today and has the capability of reaching depths of up to 2m depending on the soil environment. Most of the subsurface roots that extend out past a tree’s trunk are within the first 30-60cm of soil depth, so our GPR is able to detect far beyond what is typically required.

With our ground penetrating radar services & design capabilities, we are able to not only create 3D root morphology maps that can give a better idea on the structure of the roots but also insert tree root maps into existing 2D surveys and site plans in attempts to better understand the conflicts present between existing trees and proposed developments.

2D & 3D Tree Trunk Scanning

The TRU is dual functional as it is not only used for ground penetrating radar solutions in Ontario, but we are also able to scan the inside of a tree’s trunk giving a better idea of the sound wood vs compromised wood inside a tree. This can make it easier to diagnose symptoms of the tree and determining the best course of action to take.

The use of the TreeRadar Unit is 100% non-invasive unlike other common methods to measure tree root and trunk health. Just like a doctor uses a MRI machine to help diagnose a patient, the TRU can give our arborists a better idea of the health of the tree and can recommend the best treatments for remedial action.

Applications for Ground Penetrating Radar

  • Mapping Tree Roots for Development Planning: Utilize GPR to map the intricate web of tree roots, enabling urban planners and developers to identify developable areas without harming existing greenery. This technology ensures that new constructions, such as building footprints, can be strategically placed to avoid damaging vital root systems within a tree’s dripline, in which can aid in the approval process and in preserving urban canopies.

  • Assessing Tree Structural Health: Combined with risk assessments, GPR trunk scans provide invaluable insights into the internal health of trees. Identifying cavities or decayed areas helps in predicting potential tree failures, ensuring public safety and preserving urban green spaces.

  • Guiding Environmental Conservation Efforts: In residential and municipal settings, GPR facilitates the conservation of mature trees by informing construction practices and urban planning. This approach promotes a harmonious balance between development and environmental stewardship.

  • Enhancing Green Infrastructure Management: By mapping root systems and assessing tree health, GPR supports the management and maintenance of green infrastructure, contributing to more resilient and sustainable urban environments.

  • Determining Boundary Trees Below the Soil Line: GPR can accurately locate the extent of tree roots across property lines, identifying boundary trees and trees that are on someone else’s property. This capability is crucial for resolving disputes and planning construction in densely populated areas.

  • Root Pruning and Tree Management: By providing a clear image of root structures, GPR aids in determining the extents for safe root pruning. This ensures the health and stability of trees during construction or landscaping activities, minimizing impact on the tree’s structural integrity.

  • Expert Opinion and Peer Reviews: The detailed data obtained from GPR scans can form the basis for expert opinions in court cases or peer-reviewed studies, especially in disputes over property damage or development impacts on natural assets.

  • Municipal Infrastructure Planning: GPR assists municipalities in planning and implementing new infrastructure projects, such as water mains or sewer lines, by identifying potential conflicts with private tree roots in older urban areas. This foresight can prevent costly repairs and tree damage.

The TreeRadar™ Unit can create the following maps:

  • 2D & 3D Root Morphology and Location Maps
  • Root Density Maps for Tree Root Structure Health
  • 2D Root Size Diagrams
  • Raw Scans of the Soil Horizon
  • 2D & 3D Pie Map of a Tree's Trunk (Compromised vs Sound Wood)
  • 2D Vertical Trunk Maps
